   Orienteering Day

           Stearns Scout Camp

           Saturday, October 19, 2002

The sport of orienteering is a fun outdoor activity for Scouts and troops. The challenge of using map and compass to locate markers in the woods in the shortest amount of time makes this an exciting, as well as educational program.

The program will include training sessions on mapping and compass, followed by immediate    in-field practice. This is the perfect way to get Scouts interested in the world of orienteering and provide new challenges for experienced Scouts.  Advancement opportunities will be included.

To help provide the best training possible, it is necessary that each troop sign up for a training time slot. The training times offered are:

                9:00 - 10:00 a.m.

                10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

                11:00 - 12:00 Noon

      12:30 -   1:30 p.m.

                  1:30 -   2:30 p.m.

                  2:30 -   3:30 p.m.

After the training session the Scouts can then choose to try optional orienteering courses. There is also the opportunity for adult leaders to learn how to use the camp’s orienteering course throughout the year.

Scouts should bring a compass, watch, pen or pencil, clipboard per patrol and bag lunch if your troop is in camp over lunch time.  Be sure to bring warm footwear and dress for a cross-country hike.

Please fill in the form below and send to:

You can also call in your time preference to the camping department at 763-545-4550. This event will happen rain, shine or snow!

The ScoutingBSA.org web site is a legacy site of the Viking Council BSA, now Northern Star Council.
This site was the original council site and was active from 1996 to 2002 and run by volunteers.  As the web became more important to Scouting, the council took over with paid staff.  This site is no longer maintained but is an interesting snapshot of an early Scouting web site.    You can share your comments
